AI/ML Engineer vs Data Scientist

These titles get used interchangeably in job postings constantly, and it costs companies real time. They're different jobs, with different hiring bars, and confusing them leads to a search that filters for the wrong skill set from day one.

The core distinction

Data Scientist

Analysis and modeling

Focuses on generating insight from data, building and validating models, and answering specific business questions. Strong statistics background, often works in notebooks before anything reaches production.

AI/ML Engineer

Production systems

Focuses on building and operating the infrastructure that serves models at scale: pipelines, deployment, monitoring, and reliability. Strong software engineering background applied to ML systems.

Why the confusion costs you time

A job posting that asks for "AI/ML Engineer" but lists mostly statistical modeling requirements will attract Data Scientists who can't actually own a production pipeline. A posting that asks for "Data Scientist" but really needs someone to build and operate infrastructure will attract analysts who've never shipped a system that other teams depend on. Either mismatch burns weeks before you notice the pattern in your interview pipeline.

Which one you actually need

If the job is mostly "what should we do based on this data," you need a Data Scientist. If the job is mostly "build and run the system that makes this work reliably in production," you need an AI/ML Engineer. Leadership roles in this space increasingly need real fluency in both, which is exactly why our own AI/ML and data leadership placements have leaned toward candidates with production ownership experience specifically, not just analytical chops.

Plenty of candidates have built a model in a notebook. Far fewer have owned a data pipeline that other teams actually depend on in production. That's the real dividing line.
