What Is Engineering Recruiting?

Engineering recruiting is specialist recruiting for technical roles, engineers, engineering managers, and technical leadership, done by people who can evaluate real technical depth rather than keyword-matching a resume. It's a different discipline from general recruiting and from staffing, and the difference matters more than most hiring managers realize.

The core idea

A general recruiter can source candidates, schedule interviews, and manage a process. What they usually can't do is tell the difference between a candidate who's genuinely built and shipped a system end to end and one who's read enough documentation to sound credible for 30 minutes. Engineering recruiting means the recruiter can push past the resume: ask for the specific system, the tradeoff, the outcome, and know whether the answer holds up.

Engineering recruiting vs. general recruiting

General recruiting

Volume and process

Sources broadly, screens for keywords and years of experience, manages the interview logistics. Works well for roles where the evaluation bar is more standardized.

Engineering recruiting

Technical depth and direct sourcing

Sources directly rather than waiting on applications, runs real technical screens, and can distinguish a candidate who's actually shipped something from one who's memorized the vocabulary.

What this actually looks like in practice

Direct sourcing over job postings

The strongest engineers are employed and not applying anywhere. Reaching them takes direct outbound, not a listing.

Structured technical evaluation

Coding assessments and technical deep dives, not a single unstructured conversation.

Domain-aware matching

Matching candidates on stack, stage, and problem domain, not just seniority level.

Reference checks that ask the right question

Asking specifically what a candidate owned and whether their team stayed, not generic endorsements.

When you actually need it

If you're hiring a role where technical depth is hard to evaluate yourself, a specialist or leadership hire in particular, engineering recruiting earns its keep. If you're filling a high-volume, well-defined role with a clear evaluation rubric already in place, general recruiting or in-house sourcing may be enough.

The whole value of a specialist is that they can tell the difference between someone who sounds right and someone who is right. That's not a volume problem, it's a judgment problem.
