Candidate Guide

How to stand out as a GTM candidate

The candidates who get placed fastest aren't necessarily the most experienced, they're the most specific. Here's what actually gets a recruiter's attention, and what to fix before your next interview.

Specificity beats seniority

"I exceeded quota" tells a recruiter nothing. "I carried a $1.2M quota, closed at 118%, and my average deal size was $22K with a 45-day sales cycle" tells them everything. The second version is checkable, memorable, and immediately tells us whether your experience actually matches the role we're filling.

This applies to every claim on your resume and in your interviews. Vague accomplishments get skimmed past. Specific ones get remembered and get you called back.

What to have ready before any GTM interview

  1. Your number, exactly

Quota, attainment percentage, and the time period. Not "I was a top performer," the actual figure.

  2. Deal size and cycle length

Average and range. This is how a recruiter checks whether your experience actually transfers to the role's motion.

  3. One pipeline-building story

A specific example of how you built pipeline from zero, not inherited leads. This is the single most differentiating story you can tell.

  4. Why you're looking

A real, specific answer. "New challenge" is a non-answer. "My territory got cut and I want more room to build" is a real one.

Apply even if you don't check every box

Most GTM job postings are wish lists written by someone hoping for a unicorn, not a hard filter. If your deal size, motion, and stage experience genuinely match, apply. The requirements that matter most are almost never the full list.

The candidates who get placed fastest aren't the ones with the longest resumes, they're the ones who can tell me exactly what they did, in numbers, without hedging. That's what separates a strong candidate from a great one in the first five minutes of a call.

FAQ

What do GTM recruiters actually look for beyond the resume?

Specificity. Recruiters look for candidates who can name exact numbers, exact deal sizes, and exact steps they took, not vague claims like "exceeded quota" without the context of what the quota was and how it was hit.

Should I apply even if I don't match every requirement?

Yes, if the core of the role matches your motion, deal size, and stage experience. Most GTM job postings are wish lists, not hard requirements.
